Pritzker Architecture Prize 2009: Peter Zumthor

” Peter Zumthor is a master architect admired by his colleagues around the world for work that is focused, uncompromising and exceptionally determined. He has conceived his method of practice almost as carefully as each of his projects. For 30 years, he has been based in the remote village of Haldenstein in the Swiss mountains, removed from the flurry of activity of the international architectural scene. There, together with a small team, he develops buildings of great integrity—untouched by fad or fashion. Declining a majority of the commissions that come his way, he only accepts a project if he feels a deep affinity for its program, and from the moment of commitment, his devotion is complete, overseeing the project’s realization to the very last detail… “

Fue inaugurado recién en febrero de este año y pese a su magnitud, fue diseñado y construido en solo 4 años, siendo una de las principales  construcciones que debía de estar apta para cubrir las demandas ocasionadas principalmente por las olimpiadas Beijing 2008.

El terminal 3 es un edificio de casi 3 kilómetros de longitud “2.900 metros” y ha tenido como concepto de diseño la forma de dragón y tiene como principales materiales constructivos el vidrio y el acero, la estructura tiene un techo curvilíneo compuesto de claraboyas triangulares que permiten aprovechar al máximo la luz y conservar el calor; motivo por el cual se le ha considerado como uno de los edificios mas representativos de nuestros días.

Con una superficie de aproximada de 986.000 metros cuadrados, la Terminal 3 del Aeropuerto de Beijing duplica el área total de sus otras dos terminales y permitirá un tránsito de 76 millones de pasajeros al año frente a los 53,7 millones que circularon en el 2007 por esa terminal aérea, la cual es una de las diez más transitadas del mundo.

En el interior del terminal 3 de Pekín, destaca la reproducción de jardines a imagen y semejanza de los existentes en el Palacio de Verano de Pekín, ademas dentro de las instalaciones hay tiendas y los servicios propios de un aeropuerto, sino también un jardín chino, con puentes, arroyos y una gran variedad de plantas, que además de ser una ‘agradable visión’ para los pasajeros, aportando humedad al interior de la instalación.
